Sharnbrook & Colworth RFC
Milton Keynes RUFC

SCRUFC v Mliton Keynes II Saturday 18 Sept 2021

In their first league fixture of the 2021-22 campaign, SCRUFC hosted Milton Keynes 2nd XV at the Bedford Athletic 3G pitch. With 15 men for Sharnbrook & Colworth and 17 for MK, both sides looked primed for a long battle. Sharnbrook & Colworth forwards started superbly, gaining possession on an MK scrum in the first few minutes, then earning field position with a composed attack and ball control. An injury to Jack Symonds, Sharnbrook's starting scrum half, led to a reshuffling of the pack and a generous lending of an MK player to keep Sharnbrook at full strength. The game remained scoreless for the first 35 minutes until Tom Dalton executed a beautiful chip and chase into the corner to put the score at 5-0 at half time.

Sharnbook & Colworth forwards made a quick start again in the second half, with Captain Chris Compton surging over the line in first 2 minutes (James Paull conversion). Minutes later, his second-row partner Rob Ayles added a try with a clever, heads-up play and burst through the MK defence off a penalty restart. A second James Paull conversion brought the score to 19-0.

MK countered in the 52nd minute with a try of their own as their backs created some open space. Both sides fought hard as the score remained 19-5 through 72 minutes until MK added another try and conversion. An injury to Sharnbrook & Colworth hooker, Kieran Bonas, meant Sharnbrook would need to finish the game with 14 men. Finding an overlap out wide, MK evened the score in the closing minutes as the match ended in a 19-19 draw.
